Questions
- What personal qualities or teaching skills of the instructor contributed
to the success of the course?
- Did any qualities or teaching practices of the instructor hinder the
success of the course?
- What is your opinion of the course, including printed materials?
- Add any other comments.
Student 1
- Laurie loves what she teaches; website design, anime, film. Because
she loves what she teaches she has abundant knowledge of the subjects
and enjoys sharing her opinions and facts with the class. She tries
to provoke thought and participation by asking questions and making
interesting comments.
- No, Laurie was always open and available for questions and she gave
solid examples for the students to be guided by. Sometimes she would
sit with the students and guide him/her through the steps of computer
imagery, graphics, etc.
- This course allows the student free reign over the projects assigned.
It is a very good course for the beginner abd ab even better course
for people who already know how to build websites.
- I really enjoyed this class because the teacher really allowed us
to express our own opinions and whatever we wanted on our websites.
She created a nuturing environment that allowed us to be creative.
Student 2
- She knew what she was talking about, but open and willing to listen
to the students and incorporate their ideas. It also helped that when
she asked us to do something technical, she could actually do it also,
and was able to help.
- No.
- I thought the course was great. I accidentally got in it and am glad
I stayed. I learned a lot. The reading was really good, even the web
articles. I didn't like the book about books though, that was genuinely
boring.
- Overall it was a great class and I'm more open than I was before to
new things. It was a class I actually looked forward to coming to.
Student 3
- Has a personal interest in the material. Is always able to answer
my questions. Made good use of our time in the classroom.
- Nope.
- Very interesting. From the games to the readings all around interesting
and fun material. I especially like the formats of our assignments.
(the moo, blogger, etc.).
- I tell everyone looking for an English course to take this one.
Student 4
- Instructor cared and enjoyed what she taught. This allowed her to
convey the concepts she wanted us to learn more easy. Her ability to
relate to the students, and our problems also allowed the class to run
smoothly.
- I'm not sure what we're supposed to get out of the reading materials
we had other than to expose us to different forms of ideas and/or styles
of thinking. More time might have been taken to explain , but I wouldn't
want just that because if I had to choose, then that part of my class
was my least liked.
Student 5
-
- Incredible enthusiasm for the class and subject matter
- Lots of real-life examples
- Relating to student's interests
- Flexibility with time, class, help, etc.
- Would prefer examples before leading The End of Books
- This is a great course with lots of information. The printed materials
were interesting; however, End of Books was difficult to read
without any background on the subject.
- Fantastic class! The best on campus!
Student 6
- The instructor and students shared similar interests that were integrated
into the course. She tried very hard to stimulate interest from the
students by asking their opinions of where to take the course, despit
frequently lazy reactions from the class.
- The course was a real pleasure to have, and I enjoyed all printed
materials, except for the book about hypertext media, which was dull
and repetitive.
- This course was basically easy and fun. I enjoyed it a lot, but I
wish my classmates had been more enthusiastic and contributional during
class.
Student 7
- Laurie is conducting research on the material we have covered in the
class not to mention she has grown up with comics and vidoe games. She
has a really strong background for teaching this material. She knows
how to interpret comics, movies, and video games due to the experience
she has with them.
- No, because she knew everything so well it was easy for her to relay
the information to us.
- Overall it is not a strenuous course. Some people may think the material
covered in this course doesn't matter to the world, but in fact it has
played major roles with dealing with 9/11 and other tragedies.
- I think that Laurie needs to incorporate more iternerary into the
class as far as the video game part goes. I also think that the course
shoul dbe sectioned a bit better with the showing of movies on what
we are studying that week.
Student 8
- Laurie was always open to opinion and even change. She was very student
oriented so she made me feel more comfortable than most teachers. She
is also very well read and opinionated on the subject material, which
was good exposure to new ideas.
- She tended to jump from one topic to the next in a matter of days,
which brought us through a lot of intersecting material but didn't allow
us to focus on anything for very long.
- I enjoyed all the books except for the one about hypertexts - it was
too boring and repetitive. Overall the course material was very interesting
and fun, especially the movies. I'm also grateful for the web building
experience.
- I'd appreciate more focus on comics, and maybe something different
than the material we read. Laurie was the best teacher I've had in awhile
- she is driven and energetic and openminded and easy to get along with.
The movies could have been shown at an earlier time, 7:20-9:30 is too
late for most people.
Student 9
- The instructor demonstrated enthusiasm for the subject matter and
promoted a unique class experience by introducing us to new ideas and
technology. The instructor encouraged creativity and freedom of expression
and sought to make the course an enriching experience for the class.
- no.
- I loved it. The only material I found tedious was The End of Books
or Books Without End, while learning about hypertext was interesting,
the structure of the book made it exceedingly tedious to read.
- I wish this course would continue longer or that it led to a succession
of similar courses of continuity advancement.
Student 10
- Definitely the enthusiam for the topics discussed in class shown by
Laurie. She also has a great deal of knowledge concerning what she is
teaching whihc helped me to understand anything I may have been confused
on.
- Not particularly. The only thing that sometimes frustrated me was
when we had a class discussion but then strayed off into an unrelated
tangent that had nothing to do with class material.
- The class was unique in its structure and material. I liked working
at my own pace throughout the semester on the class work. Also, the
material conveyed was current and related to present issues of society.
We weren't just taught and regurgitated material like many other English
classes.
- We were free to voice opinion, and I was never once uncomfortable
in the class setting. The class was overall very enjoyable and Laurie
made it fun.
Student 11
- Enthusiams for the subject matter helped. Very animated, helped keep
me focused rather than daydreaming.
- None really, if any, lack of strictness. But a more strict class wouldn't
have been as successful.
- This was a fun class. I liked the readings from the comic books. The
other books were a bit boring and hard to read. The movies were excellent
in showing examples of what we were learning, or at least entertaining.
- Needs more class participation. More group work or giving extra credit
for talking in class may have helped in class interaction. Other than
lack of class interaction, everything was great.
