Advanced Web Design
Overview
The Advanced Web Design Class is a non-credit course which will cover the more advanced aspects of web design. These aspects include (but are not limited to) tables, frames, .shtml, and stylesheets. We will be working on PCs and Macs (for use with Macromedia Dreamweaver), and on the UNIX workstations.
The IMAGE Lab Advanced Web Design Seminar is meant for those who are comfortable with web design and HTML. This course is designed for people who:
- Are comfortable looking at and reading HTML tags and code
- Have mastered basic HTML presentation (<P>, <BR>, images, links, and simple tables)
- Are comfortable with (or eager to learn about) the UNIX (NWE) interface.
During the course of the seminar, we will explore a variety of complex design options from both a technological and a theoretical perspective. Our theoretical discussions will be grounded in Robin Williams' book, The Non-Designer's Design Book, a copy of which I do not require that you obtain. If you'd like to look at the book before the class starts, please drop by the IMAGE Lab and read a bit of the IMAGE Lab copy of the book. Please remember that the IMAGE Lab books must remain in the Lab.
Class Schedule
- Day 1: Advanced Tables, SHTML, and CSS
Today we'll cover using tables for structural page layout and overall site design. It will cover using embedded tables properly for site layout, alignment, and ease. Today, we'll also cover using SHTML for modular, efficient, and easy site construction and maintenance. Then, we'll spend some time on the basics of CSS for added site modularity and ease.
Day 1 notes - Day 2: Passwords and Scripts
Today, we'll cover using Apache to set up password protected areas on your website. This is a great way to share files without worrying about random people accessing those files. This is also a great way to have development areas and to protect files under construction for a conference (that you're organizing or attending) or a journal.
The second part of the class, we'll cover using pre-set scripts for your website. For this, we'll set up the ls.cgi script that will list your files for ease in people searching your site. We'll also add in the Google Search field to your site. From here, we can discuss using the mailing script to set up a contact page, using scripts written by others on and off-campus and more.
