Summer 2003 Class: Learning LaTeX

LaTeX (pronounced Lay-Tech or Lah-Tech) is a text markup language that can effectively process notes, chapter numbers, and other notation in a clear and consistent manner. LaTeX is needed to combat the gross ineffectiveness of programs like Microsoft Word and its kin. LaTeX offers us an alternative to frustrating problems, like never being able to understand how MSWord decides where to put a footnote or why. LaTeX can simultaneously make documents in print, PDF, and HTML form. This is particularly important because UF requires all new theses and dissertations to be in online PDF form. Learning LaTeX will prevent the frustration, confusion, and stress that accompanies ineffective programs and problems of conversion - this will save a great deal of work time and a great deal of hassle.
